Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant
Tucked away on Shirley Hills Rd in Croydon, the Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant stands as a local gem for anyone who craves authentic Chinese cuisine in a refined yet welcoming setting. From the moment you step in, there’s a sense that this isn’t your average takeaway joint-it’s where traditional flavors meet modern dining expectations. Whether you're stopping by for a quick bite or settling in for a leisurely dinner with friends, there's something on the menu that promises to impress.
One of the first things that hits you is the diverse and well-curated menu. The Peking Duck-crispy on the outside, tender inside-is an absolute must-try and often sets the bar for the meal ahead. Served traditionally with pancakes, cucumber, and hoisin sauce, it’s both indulgent and comforting. Another standout from the starter section is the Sharing Platter, ideal if you're indecisive or just feeling social. It features a flavorful combination of Spring Rolls, Smoked Chicken, Seaweed, Ribs, and the ever-popular Prawn Toast-a beautifully balanced mix of texture and taste.
For those looking to spice things up, the Hot & Sour Soup and Spicy Chicken Wings (6pcs) bring just the right kick. Vegetarians and vegans aren’t left out either, with delicious options like the Braised Tofu and a variety of vegan-friendly small plates, each presented with flair.
Royal Garden isn’t shy about drinks either. Whether you're in the mood for a chilled glass of white wine, a handcrafted Mojito, or the ever-stylish Espresso Martini, the bar menu is as diverse as the food. It’s one of those places where you’ll find cocktails just as carefully prepared as the dishes-balanced, bold, and perfect for pairing. The tea selection is equally worth noting, especially for those who enjoy a more traditional accompaniment to their meal.
What’s also refreshing is how well-thought-out the space is for all types of guests. From solo diners enjoying a quiet meal to families or groups gathering for a celebration, the seating feels spacious and comfortable. Accessibility is clearly a priority here, with features like a wheelchair-accessible entrance, parking, and seating, making the space inclusive for all guests. The outdoor seating adds a nice touch when the weather’s right, offering a more relaxed dining experience.
Among the mains, the Sweet & Sour Chicken brings that nostalgic comfort of classic takeaway, but elevated. The chicken is crispy yet juicy, and the sauce hits the sweet-tangy balance just right-no overpowering syrupiness here. If you’re after something heartier, the Duck Curry is worth exploring. Rich and aromatic, it offers a more complex take on traditional Chinese flavors, layered with subtle spices.
A surprising twist on the menu is the Fujin Style Fried Rice, which delivers more than your standard egg-fried expectations. It’s smoky, slightly sticky, and packed with flavorful bits of protein and vegetables-a satisfying dish that could easily stand alone. For dessert, the Fried Banana is a crowd-pleaser: golden, crunchy, and drizzled with just enough syrup to leave you feeling happily full but not overwhelmed.
Service-wise, you’ll find a friendly and efficient team that seems genuinely passionate about the food. They’re quick with recommendations and knowledgeable about the ingredients and preparation methods, especially helpful if you’re trying something for the first time or navigating dietary needs.
While there’s no shortage of Chinese restaurants in the Croydon area, what makes Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant a standout is how it merges quality dining with the comfort of a neighborhood favorite. It's the kind of place where you can drop in for a casual lunch or dress up for a special evening-and walk away equally satisfied. With delivery and takeaway options, it’s also incredibly convenient for those evenings when you'd rather bring the Royal Garden experience home.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant! The food is delicious and they cater to all dietary requirements. Great portions, great service and even better taste! I have been coming here for years, with friends and family as they cater to all, and because it’s that good. Rachel is wonderful too! Would recommend this place a million times to anyone!
Had the pleasure to eat here with my wife last weekend. We made our reservation over the phone a few days before. They were very pleasant and helpful over the phone. Having not been to this restaurant in years. We were curious to see how things are now. We were not disappointed. We arrived on time with a few minutes to spare at hrs. We were greeted warmly and soon seated at our lovely table in the window.Prawn crackers offered on the house.Menus for drinks and food were delivered in short order. Before long drinks were on the table. Properly presented, good level of ice in the drinks, glasses clean and fresh. We ordered wine to go with both starters and main. The white was served nice and cold, ice bucket provided as standard. Red was good temperature. Wine glasses too were spotless and shiny. I do hate paying restaurant prices for good wine and then having stained glasses. Well done..!Unfortunately the mixed Dim Sum was not available so we made do with another mix of starters. Pork dumplings, spicy soft shell crab, and spicy ribs. All were served promptly, and were hot and tasty. The ribs were deep fired which threw me from the basic Chinese recipe but this did not take away from the taste. For main course we had Ginger fried rice, bamboo shoots with Chinese mushrooms, and a delightful stir fried beef in honey and black pepper sauce. Everything was served hot, fresh and tasty. All food dishes had a high level of presentation. The cutlery and tableware was all clean and polished. Simple but attractive table set up. Personally I would have like a little more colour on the tables, either coloured napkins or bright flowers. Felt a little too all over white. Buts that just my opinion. The staff were incredibly friendly, the service overly attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The whole restaurant was very clean and shiny. Toilets too were very clean. There is plenty of free car parking. No issues with disabled access or facilities. All in all. This was a lovely evening out with my wife. We really enjoyed the food and the restaurant overall. Would return without hesitation.
I really don't know why this place doesn't have a better Google rating. We came for my mum's birthday and all the staff were really warm, welcoming and efficient. All of our food came out promptly, it was all delicious with fresh and vibrant flavours. There was also a great dessert selection and generally lots of options for vegetarians/vegans. Slightly pricier per person than your average, but that hasn't deterred me from coming back again. I would say it's the nicest Chinese I've had, and it has revived my liking for Chinese food. Would highly recommend the crispy fried duck!Wheelchair accessibility: Slopes, no steps, wide entrance, fully accessible for electric wheelchairs and disabled toilet.
